Ilex x aquipernyi (Dragon Lady Holly)

Ilex x aquipernyi, the Dragon Lady Holly sometimes called Chinese holly, is a hybrid evergreen shrub that is prized for its glossy, spiny leaves and vibrant red berries, making it an eye-catching addition to any garden or landscape. It maintains a pyramidal shape.  It’s often used as a specimen plant or hedge for both decorative and functional purposes.

Key Features

Appearance:

  1. Size and Growth:
    • This holly variety typically grows to a height of 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) with a spread of 5–8 feet (1.5–2.4 meters). It has a dense, pyramidal shape, making it ideal for privacy screens or as a hedge.
  2. Leaves:
    • The leaves are dark green, glossy, and leathery, with very sharp spines along the edges, giving them a dramatic, “dragon-like” appearance. This feature adds to the plant’s ornamental value throughout the year. It is safer to wrap plant when planting.
  1. Berries:
    • Dragon Lady holly produces vibrant red berries in the fall, which are a striking contrast to the dark green foliage. These berries are not only beautiful but also provide food for birds in the winter.

  2. Flowers:
    • It produces small, white flowers in the spring, but they are relatively inconspicuous compared to the bright red berries that follow. The flowers are usually pollinated by nearby male hollies.

Growing Conditions:

  1. Hardiness:
    • Dragon Lady holly is quite hardy and can grow in USDA zones 5–9. It tolerates both cold winters and warmer temperatures, making it versatile for different climates.
  2. Soil and Care:
    • This holly prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does best in full sun to partial shade. It’s relatively low maintenance once established but benefits from regular watering, especially in dry conditions.
    • Pruning is typically done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant, as it can become quite dense.
  3. Pests and Diseases:
    • Dragon Lady holly is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but it can sometimes attract scale insects or holly leaf miners. Proper care and monitoring can help prevent major issues.

Uses:

  • Hedges and Screens: Its dense, upright growth makes it perfect for creating privacy screens or formal hedges.  This is a focal point, backdrop for gardens.
  • Wildlife: The red berries are a favorite of songbirds, robins, cedar waxwings, and thrushes. The dense foliage provides cover for birds and small wildlife to rest, nest, and hide from predators.  The flowers in early summer attract bees.

Interesting Facts:

  • Specimen Plant: Its unique, spiny leaves and bright berries make it an excellent focal point in garden beds or as a standalone specimen.
  • Winter Interest: The red berries and evergreen foliage provide year-round interest, especially during the colder months when other plants are dormant.  Often used as cutting for winter arrangement.
  • Dragon Lady Holly is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a hardy, attractive evergreen shrub that also provides seasonal beauty, with its vibrant berries and striking foliage.
